The Board of Registration of Social Workers is authorized by state law to investigate consumer complaints filed against social workers, and to issue sanctions when there is evidence of a violation of laws, regulations, or standards of conduct that pose a risk to the public. Social worker complaints are specifically handled by the Division of Professional Licensure, which is an agency within the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation. When a new complaint is filed against a social worker, the Board staff will conduct an initial assessment of the allegations to determine if there is any potential violation of the law, and if the complaint falls within the purview of the Board’s jurisdiction. If it is determined that an investigation is warranted, an Investigator will be assigned to the matter, and the social worker will be asked to prepare a written response to the complaint. The Investigator will also request the production of certain documents, and may seek to interview the social worker and other appropriate individuals. Ultimately, the Investigator will report his/her findings to the Board, which will decide to either close the complaint or recommend that the social worker be disciplined. At that point in time, the social worker may choose to resolve the case and accept a negotiated discipline, or instead opt for a full administrative hearing.
“I am a medical doctor who has worked with K&F on a number of cases. I am consistently impressed with the K&F team’s collaborative approach, with their individual commitment, and with their strong litigation skills.”
“My counsel at K&F was very patient and diligent. She was very thorough and detailed in explaining issues to me. She helped me explain my questions and understand the answers. I am glad K&F was on my side.”
“It all went very well. As soon as I met Attorney Koufman I felt very comfortable with the way he approached things. He definitely knows the law and he made it really easy and straightforward for me. I definitely recommend him to others because he is fair and honest. He’s a good guy.”
“Melissa Garand & Victor Koufman represented me in my civil rights action. They were always responsive to my requests and were very knowledgeable with respect to my civil rights. As a result, they helped me achieve a very favorable outcome with respect to my case. I highly recommend them to others whose civil rights were violated.”
“I was very happy with the results from Koufman & Frederick. Attorney Garand was very understanding and I was comfortable with her. Considering what I went through, it went really quickly; faster than I expected. There were no problems. Now everything is going great in my life.”
“I received a “Not Guilty” verdict. Everything was just fantastic. Attorney Koufman looked at every single thing. I am very happy about what he did. He’s a very good lawyer. He’s respectful. The jury was six women and one guy, and they liked him very much.”
“Koufman & Frederick retained me as an expert in a medical case. They effectively and thoroughly prepared for trial by, for instance, developing a good working knowledge of the content of my testimony. They also helped me determine the best manner by which I presented my expert testimony, and at trial, they were relaxed but very effective before the jury. “
